THE MAIN INN (circa 1872)
A BRIEF HISTORY
The main front part of the building right at the corner of Bedford and Main was the residence of W.H. Fredenburgh, one of the early merchants and lumbermen. It was built around 1876 and was extended multiple times since then. It was first used as a hotel in the 1930s and was owned by Alex and Lena Brown who called it the Lexana Hotel. This title stamp can be seen on the hearth in front of the fireplace in the Dining Room. The original bar and wooden beer cooler with “Tweedsmuir” inscription still exist today!
Lean back in a chair or couch in the lobby, lounge or dining beside the fireplaces.
Have an afternoon bite and beer on the waterfront patio Catch a golden mountain sunset with the finest in live music, over a bottle of wine and a hearty dinner.
Host your closest people on the shore of the pond followed by casual cocktails and apps before the real celebration indoors or up on our flowing shade sail patio tucked in by the hotel.
…and our conference space has the most picturesque views!
At the end of it all, relax in your room and cozy up in a space that matches classic and modern with the historic heart of the Rideau.

A BRIEF HISTORY
(This was the former history note about the Fredenburgh House which had a fire on Friday January 18 2019.)
The Fredenburgh House was built by William Fredenburgh in 1876 for his son and daughter in law. The family was the owner of the local sash and door mill and the extensive trim in the house exemplifies that fact. William was the reeve of Westport and lived in the house across the street, which now remains as the anchor of the Cove Country Inn, with its wonderful views of the Westport Harbour. The Fredenburgh House later became known as the ‘Annex’ to the hotel, which was owned and renamed by various entrepreneurs over the last 100 years, including the Roberts family, Alex and Lena Brown [Lexena Hotel], the Cummerfords [Tweedsmuir Hotel] and Dick Ready. In 1988 it was purchased by the Cowans and the Carvers and became part of the now Cove Country Inn and continues to be restored to its original stately charm.
Features parlour with fireplace and lounges, new sunroom and breakfast nook and a deck overlooking Westport harbour. Have a listen to the old Victrola Record Player!
