CAMPFIRE LIARS CLUB feat. PAUL LANGLOIS of The Tragically Hip
June 29, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm$60
Catch Paul and his friends in an evening of impromptu jam and revelry. Buffet and Show $60 + HST…
Paul Langlois (guitarist for The Tragically Hip) is set to release his 2nd solo album, Not Guilty, on Langlois’ own independent record label, Ching Music, on November 5th, 2013.
Not Guilty was recorded in early June 2013, over a six-day period, at The Hip’s Bathouse Studio in Bath, Ontario. Bathouse engineers Aaron Holmberg and Nyles Spencer recorded and mixed the album, which was produced by Langlois. According to Langlois it was a far different experience for The Tragically Hip guitarist to record than was his first solo effort Fix This Head.
Why was the experience so different?
“Well, for one thing,” says Langlois, “I recorded this one with a band instead of all by myself. It was a lot more fun to make because of that – better playing, more energy, more laughs doing it, lots of creative help and ideas from all of them.”
So, who’s in the band?
“They’re all good friends of mine. Mauro Sepe played drums – we grew up together (since the age of 5) and we still hang out when we can. Jeff Montgomery played bass – he and I are pretty tight, and I also produced his album Songs From The Middle a few years back. And, Rob Baker played guitar – obviously Robbie and I have been close friends for 30 years, inside and outside of The Hip. He was also very encouraging when I was recording my first solo project. So much so that when I decided I wanted to record another album, he was a natural choice for me – and thankfully he said yes!”
And, as the saying goes, it was done ‘live off the floor’:
“It seemed to be the most natural and the most true, fun way for us to go. We’d all learned the songs pretty well beforehand, and we felt good about that going in. Once we were set-up with some good sounds, we rolled through the tunes and picked the best takes. We started recording on a Monday, and by Thursday we had finished the basic band tracks and were moving onto a few overdubs. Kept it all pretty simple!”
On first listen, a few of the highlights on the album are the hard-driving “Watching You”, a slow-burning song called “Waiting On My Train” and the album’s title track “Not Guilty”, a rocker that seems to tell the story of some kind of tragic bar fight.
The song “Table’s Been Set” was inspired by Paul going permanently deaf in his right ear on the morning of December 9, 2011. Sudden hearing loss is a very rare condition that is not in any way related to repeated exposure to loud music.
Has that been a difficult adjustment?
“Sorry, I didn’t quite hear the question.”
Will there be a tour? Any live shows?
“Yeah, I didn’t tour at all on my first album, so I was pretty determined to set up some kind of tour with this one. And, the guys in the band were into it too. So, we’re going to do it. We’ll be in pretty small to medium-sized clubs, from east to west, coast to coast across Canada, from mid-November until mid-December.”
“I’m bringing Greg Ball and his band to play at all of the shows. Greg’s on my Ching Music record label, which put out his most recent album, Mr Rightplace. I may be a little biased, because I produced it, but I think it’s really good! Greg’s a great songwriter and he’s got a lot of other cool tunes, and I know they’ll put on a great show.”
“We’re also going to have a singer-songwriter from Australia, Pete Murray, join us on the road. He does really well in Australia and a lot of other countries. He also just happens to be friends with Jeff Montgomery, and Pete wants to get out and play some shows in Canada.”
“We know we’re all going to have a blast for that month of shows, and we’re going to try to make sure the audience does too!”

POLICY FOR 2019/20
FOR CANCELLATIONS, REDUCTIONS OR NO SHOWS TO RESERVATIONS FOR
BLUES ON THE RIDEAU SHOWS
You will be required to give your credit card number plus phone number and/or email address when you make your reservations.
Your card will not be charged at the time of reservation. You pay the night of the show.
You have until one week (7 DAYS) prior to the show to cancel or change the number of spots you have reserved for and/or your rooms – at no charge.
The Cove will also continue its policy of calling or emailing everyone who has reserved in advance one week prior to the upcoming show as a reminder.
If you do not notify The Cove that have to CANCEL or REDUCE the number of reserved spaces on your reservation AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE SHOW – or if you are a NO SHOW the night of the Show – then YOUR CREDIT CARD WILL BE CHARGED THE FULL AMOUNT for the number of spots you have reserved.
However – understanding that sometimes unforeseen things come up at the last minute which can cause a cancellation – and in the spirit of good will – if this happens we will CREDIT you the full amount that your card has been charged FOR A FUTURE SHOW in 2019/20 (on a space available basis – Advance Reservation still required). We will do this on a ONE TIME BASIS ONLY..After that, if it happens again, your card will be charged and there will be no credit for a future show.
We are introducing this Policy due to the large number of last minute cancellations and No-Shows we have experienced on BOTR nights over the years. It is simply not fair to the people who would like to attend the Show but have been turned down because we have a full house reserved only to find on the night of the show that there are extra spaces because of late cancellations and No-Shows. And the loss of revenue from this is not fair to Choose The Blues Productions or The Cove Inn who have to cover all the fixed expenses regardless.
Bottom line: If you aren’t SURE you can make the show – or if you aren’t sure some of your party can make the show – then CALL AND CANCEL AT THE LATEST ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE SHOW – or your credit card will be charged.
Fair? More than fair we think. Thank you for your understanding.
