JAZZ NIGHT with Special Guest – ILA VANN
August 4, 2016 @ 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm
$5Special Guest – ILA VANN
A switch to Roulette Records brought a more polished production style on songs like ‘Can’t Help Loving That Man’, from the musical ‘Showboat’, with a soulful twist. This song later became a huge hit on the Northern Soul circuit in England.
Following this release, Ila decided to break her contract with Roulette, after receiving no promotion for any of her releases.
Ila’s friendship with songwriter Helen Miller offered her the chance to help sell the Broadway musical ‘Inner City’, written by Miller and Eve Merriam. The show opened on Broadway without Ila, after a producer thought she wasn’t ‘black’ enough to play her role. When it came time to release a single from the show, everyone involved wanted Ila to record it. ‘My Mother Said’ was released in 1972 on Pickwick International Productions, along with the magnificent B-side, ‘You Made Me This Way’. This song was another big hit in Britain. It was also written by Helen Miller.
In the seventies, Ila toured with the USO. She also toured extensively with the group Business Before Pleasure in Quebec, Canada. Since moving to Ontario, she has led a number of talented bands and has worked on many other projects. She’s continued to be a sought after solo performer as well as providing distinct harmonies for pop greats such as Frank Sinatra, Kenny Rogers, Barry Manilow, Ray Charles, Mahalia Jackson and Louis Armstrong.
Ila Vann is a vastly underrated performer – recognition of her contributions to the Soul Music genre is long overdue. She is the kind of performer that you’ll never forget. Bubbling with energy and full of life, she continues to perform in cities and towns around Eastern Ontario, Canada – Kingston, Belleville, Trenton, Brockville and others.
JAZZ NIGHT with SPENCER EVANS TRIO The Cove Inn hosts one of the most original and memorable Live Music Experiences you’ll have! The Popular Spencer Evans Trio with Rob Radford on drums, Seamus Cowan on bass and Spencer Evans on piano, clarinet and vocals has proven a formidable three performing all styles of music to huge crowds of all ages. The party has been going for over 19 years now! Join us for dinner too… The Trio plays select dates throughout the fall until the spring and EVERY THURSDAY from late spring to Thanksgiving Long Weekend. Call The Cove 1.888.COVE.INN to make reservations and confirm dates. SPENCER EVANS was born in Picton, grew up around the Quinte area, and graduated from B.C.I. Spencer plays piano, clarinet, accordion, sings, dances, prances and has been a professional musician for the past 15 years. He has played Bermuda to Bosnia, New Orleans to the North Pole, and has recorded and toured with The Cowboy Junkies, Sarah Harmer and Pat Temple, and has performed with Jeff Healey, Dan Aykroyd, Willie P. Bennett, Jack Mahieu, Alex Pangman, Maria Muldaur, and Toronto’s Swing Gang, among countless others. Spencer has appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, CBC Radio’s The Vinyl Café with Stuart McLean, MUCHmusic and CMT. A resident of Kingston for several years, Spencer keeps busy playing with numerous local bands such as Bloom, Pico de Gallo, Ghetto Xpress, The River Cats and various jazzy combos. SEAMUS COWAN plays the low bass and sings the high notes…Kind of strange but it works. Has played all kinds of music in his career so he fits right in. ROB RADFORD has a solid synergy with the boys. His drumming is some of the best around and his ferocity is difficult to tame, behind the kit that is. Together, the trio are a powerful combination. Enjoy them weekly in the summer months! JAZZ NIGHT will continue EVERY THURSDAY from May.19-Oct.6! 9-11pm $5 Reservations recommended!!!
